Yuna At The Olympics

“I think she will be remembered as a great artist, but it is a different kind of artistry”
“She has jaw-dropping magnificence…The height of her jumps, the power, the fluid beauty of her skating are like magic, and there is also a modernness about her.”

“Yu-na Kim (KOR) was by far the best, placing first in both the short and the free with a total score of 228.56, a world record. She was so superior that the competition was for second place only. Skating to George Gershwins Piano Concerto in F Major, Kim was insuperable in combining speed, athleticism and grace. Her jumps are of the highest technical quality, properly started at full speed and landed without any visible effort. Her spins are done with great flexibility. She was flawless till the end, seducing the audience with her expressiveness. But what makes her so captivating is her presentation, the way she uses her arms, her head and her body while skating on deep edges. She is as light as a feather. She is breathtaking on the ice, a real marvel. Yu-na is in a class of her own, on another planet, as I think of her. She had one of the greatest performances in figure skating history”

Korea’s Kim Yu-Na made history on day 14 [of the Olympics], setting a new world record points total in the women’s figure skating thanks to an exquisite free skate that will live long in the memory of all those who watched it…Small wonder that on such an emotionally-charged night the once-impassive Kim should be moved to tears.

“Three times,” answered Kim, asked how many times she had cried since winning the gold. “After my performance was over and then on the podium. [Joannie Rochette] started crying, and I started crying right with her.”

“But when you watched Kim Yu-na . . .Well, it was like watching Jordan. It was like watching Wayne Gretzky, the puck on his stick, behind the net, occupying his “office.” It was like watching Michael Johnson come screaming down the stretch in Atlanta in 1996. You may not know why it's awesome to watch. You just know that it is.”

“I'll never forget the night Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na became an Olympic legend. It's funny because, before the event, I dreaded covering it. I had never written about figure skating and wasn't sure I could describe what happened on a tight deadline. I am to figure skating what Shaquille O'Neal is to the Cleveland Cavaliers – just an out-of-place misfit. But Kim made it easy for me. She was stunning – elegant and athletic – and turned the night (which included the courageous performance of a Canadian skater named Joannie Rochette who was mourning her mother's death) into hers. She looked superhuman during her free skate, and when she was finished with her masterful, gold-medal performance, she reminded us that she was a 19-year-old living the same dream that little girls around the world have. She cried, long and hard. She didn't know why she was crying, but she couldn't stop, either. I'll never forget the night Kim Yu-na became an Olympic legend. And I'll never fear covering figure skating again.”

“During the competition Ms. Kim transformed herself into two characters: a James Bond flirt, aiming an invisible gun at the audience in her short program, and a free spirit skating to Gershwin’s Concerto in F with relaxed aplomb in her long program. Moving with a steady swiftness, yet seeming to melt into the music at every opportunity — not easy in an ice rink, where musical notes can sound like rain hitting tin — Ms. Kim abandoned herself to speed and poise to attain a state of grace.”

Korea’s Kim Yu-Na made history on day 14, setting a new world record points total in the women’s figure skating thanks to an exquisite free skate that will live long in the memory of all those who watched it.

“I don’t know why I cried. This is the first time,” the new Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-Na told reporters after stepping off the rink. But everyone present at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum Arena understood why, after witnessing one of the greatest performances and most inspirational evenings in Olympic Winter Games history.

The 19-year-old Korean, dancing to Gershwin’s Concerto in G, delivered a mesmerising show of elegance and athleticism. She landed an opening triple lutz-triple toe combination, followed by a perfect triple flip and double axel-double toe-double loop, but just as dazzling as her huge jumps were the breathtaking grace, precision and artistry of the performance.

“Yu-na has only been at the top of her game for a couple of years. But if she’s here another four years at this level, a lot of skaters would break down. They would try to up their games so much, there would be injuries. There’s no weakness there. Compare her with anybody; she’s got it all. Under any system, anywhere, any time, she’d win.”

“She’s the fastest skater I’ve ever seen.”
Words by: Michelle Kwan

“She’s the whole package. Her jumps are soaring and they’re equal. You don’t have one big one followed by a little tiny jump. I think she’s grown choreographically. She’s very musical. The whole thing is very beautiful and athletic, but not too athletic. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything when I watch her.”

“The level of purity in her skating is high. Of course, I haven't seen Yu-Na's skating LIVE, but just by watching through Youtube, I can feel it. There are class and quality in skating. The reason Yu-Na's skating is special is because of the innocence and that authentic feeling you can only get when it's without any blemishes. She's also musical, and at times, the way she delivers the drama is so strong that it shakes the audience. More than anything else, her technicality is unbelievably accurate. Being able to jump like that is the proof of how much she has practiced.”

WSJ: Why do you like Kim Yuna as a skater and as a person?

Ms. Dzidrums:
I’ve always been a fan of skaters with terrific technique. Yuna’s technique is breathtaking. Her spins, jumps, footwork, ice coverage are gorgeous. In addition, she’s one of the few champions in the sport to continue to push herself, not just artistically but technically. How many skaters have won a world title in such a dominating fashion and returned the next season as the heavy favorite and debuted even more technically demanding programs? You have to admire someone who does that for the sport, who is the standard in ladies figure skating and continues to try to elevate the sport. Of course, I also admire the class and integrity she has shown off the ice as well. It’s so admirable to see someone with so much influence use it in such a positive manner, as she has with her charitable work.

Irina Slutskya:
“I saw her at Olympics, I saw her at world, because i was commentating on the national tv. I really like Yuna and I saw her when she was at juniors. I cross fingers for her at the Olympics because I just want to see her at the top of the podium and I really like her skating and I wanna say 'thank you' because it is a new level of figure skating. You know, it is like everybody is on the same level and here's just one skater there - somewhere up; and I saw her at worlds, and I saw her crying, and I was crying too… but she is the Olympic Champion and she is for all her life.”

Q. Who were your Olympic heroes when you were growing up?

My older sister, Masae, is my biggest hero…[edit] Aside from judo, South Korean figure skater Kim Yu Na is also someone I admire. She was able to skate a perfect programme at the Winter Games in Vancouver. She rose to the occasion, despite the enormous pressure, the high expectations and the attention from everyone. She was smiling on the ice, but I felt her determination to win no matter what.

Dealing with Pressure

“You know, one thing I've learned, maybe through my own career: you don't guard against pressure, you have to face it head on. I didn't tell her, 'Pretend this is just another competition.' We all know it isn't. She's ready.”

After Worlds 2007

Question: Lets’s talk about the recent Tokyo Worlds. We witnessed many programs including some technically complex ones, that at the same time were executed with a lot of inspriration. And they were highly estimated by the judges. I’m talking about the performances of Xue Shen/Hongbo Zhao, Yu-Na Kim, Stephane Lambiel (even if he lacked preparation this time). Maybe the secret of success lies in the right program composed with talent and more attention should be paid to this aspect of work?

Sonia Bianchetti: Definitely yes. What made the difference between the skaters you mention and the rest, lies in the way they skated and interpreted their music. Both the short and the free program of Shen/Zhao were outstanding, breathtaking and they gave me the artistic emotion that I have missed during the last few years. They were of a very high technical level but what made them special was the beauty of the choreography, the elegance of the skating, the perfect interpretation and expression of the music. All what is needed in our sport. They were in a class of their own! Yu-Na Kim is an extremely talented, promising, young girl who possesses a rare natural elegance. Her jumps are great and she can execute them so easily, without any apparent effort, but what is even more important is that she is so beautiful on the ice. She has all what is needed to become a great champion.
